Netiquette & Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

The Internet is not owned by anyone but is a networked group of thousands of computers. Thus, reasonable behavior or “netiquette” must be followed. Netiquette are the unwritten rules that exist to govern acceptable behavior on the Internet. Whether it is e-mail or discussion groups, certain “netiquette” must be followed or the consequences can be rather severe. You may be bounced from the listserv or flamed by the other members if you violate the rules.

Listserv Netiquette rules are generally based on common sense and consideration of others. Some of the Listserv rules:

  • Do not post a message on a listserv that is not pertaining to the subject matter of the listserv;
  • Promotional or advertising postings are tolerated if short and to the point;
  • Mean, vulgar, bigoted or other offensive remarks will not be tolerated;
  • Typing your messages in capitals is considered SHOUTING;
  • Don’t pass along chain letters or make-money-fast messages;and
  • If you are unsure whether a posting or action is proper, run it past the listserv moderator.

Newsgroup Netiquette are guidelines to follow when one participates in a newsgroup:

  • Observe for a while before determining if you want to be a member;
  • Read the FAQ’s file for the newsgroup - generally will talk about advertisements;
  • Check to see if someone answered a question before you answer it the same way;
  • Spamming - advertisements to non-advertising groups is strictly prohibited;
  • No sexist, racist or demeaning messages, which is also called flaming;
  • If discussions are lengthy between two members, change to e-mail instead;and
  • Keep responses to the point and of reasonable length.

FAQ – stands for Frequently Asked Questions. These computer files contain basic information about the different components of the Internet, software or hardware. They provide a simple introduction to a topic.
